Akio Morita founded the Sony Corporation of America in 1960. He was deeply inspired by the mobility of the American workforce—a stark contrast to traditional corporate culture at the time. Applying this bold observation, he soon began actively recruiting the best and brightest middle-aged employees from other major Japanese companies to join his ranks.

This is a likeness of the building on Bryn Mawr Avenue where I worked. We had recently learned that Mr. Morita was in New York on one of his many visits to the Sony Corporation of America. Fortunately for us, his itinerary brought him directly to our Chicago-area office to meet with our Branch Manager, Mr. Gino.
Mr. Morita made it a point to personally visit key accounts whenever he traveled so he could see exactly how they presented and sold Sony products on the front lines. Mr. Gino, my Sales Manager Larry Bobruk, and I had the distinct honor of taking him to Carson Pirie Scott, Marshall Field's, and Polk Brothers. We walked the retail floors, meeting directly with the buyers and the salespeople right where the Sony products were proudly displayed.
Being chosen to escort the founder of the company and introduce him to my clients was the ultimate highlight of my entire sales career. What next?
