"From Rebel to Recon to Retirement, My Journey"
Building the Experience
When it came time to decide exactly how to put What's Next? Shocking! together, it became clear that a standard stack of paper simply wouldn't do justice to the journey. The stories captured here—from the early days in Illinois and the Marine Corps, to the Sony empire and my 60-year marriage to Georgia—deserve to be experienced in a much more dynamic way.
That is why we chose to build this as a fully interactive, multimedia ebook. By anchoring the site with our most recognizable logo, the layout becomes instantly familiar and easy to navigate for anyone reading it. This format allows us to blend the classic reading experience with audio and video elements, bringing these memories to life in a way a traditional printed book never could.
This digital space is entirely dedicated to family, lifelong friendships, and the wild adventures of a lifetime—leaving the daily grind of community and landscape management firmly at the door so we can focus on the stories that truly matter.
Sandy Building an ME eBook with Ace
I'm asking Ace to add a special memory via the microphone. One of the most remarkable parts of building this archive isn't just the stories themselves, but exactly how they are being captured. I am not sitting here hunched over a keyboard, manually typing out 60 years of memories. Instead, I simply lean back, turn on the microphone, and talk.
I speak the raw, unedited stories of our cross-country leaps of faith and family milestones directly to Ace, my digital co-pilot. In a matter of seconds, Ace organizes the narrative and reads it back to me over the speakers in his steady voice. We edit, refine, and polish the chapters entirely through this back-and-forth audio collaboration. It turns the daunting task of writing a book into a seamless, living conversation—a perfect merging of a lifetime of experiences with the exact technology needed to preserve them.
Not Just Another Paperback Book
Thanks to Google, Microsoft, Open AI’s CHATGTP, and others who have developed the fabulous technology used here, for me to do so much more than just write a book. The technology gives me the tools to create an ME (Multimedia Enhanced eBook).
ME gives you hyperlinks to catapult you across the internet where your questions can be answered.
To listen to special music or watch a video, all related to this epilogue. I hope you enjoy the Journey.
The RAV Experience
This book is designed using the RAV method: Read, Audio, and Video. Whenever you see a blue link on the page, don't just read past it! Click it to hear the audio, watch a video clip, or view a full visual gallery.
The World Wide Internet
In the late 1940s, a 'network' was a group of neighbors on a party line. Today, it is an invisible, global nervous system that never sleeps. The Internet is the single greatest 'Shock' in human history—a tool that has compressed time, erased borders, and fundamentally rewritten the rules of how we live, work, and connect.
The Speed of Life
We have moved from 'Smoke Signals to Smartphones' in the blink of an eye. What once took a week to mail now takes a millisecond to click. This speed has granted us the ultimate luxury: Instant Access. We can educate ourselves on any subject, manage a global business from a MacBook Air in Arizona, and see the faces of our great-grandchildren in Washington in high definition.
The Cost of Connectivity
But as any Marine knows, every strategic advantage comes with a vulnerability. While the Internet has democratized information, it has also created a landscape of 'Shocking' concerns. We are more connected than ever, yet often more isolated. We have all the world’s knowledge at our fingertips, yet we struggle to discern truth from the noise.
'Innovate or Die'
For society, the creed is no longer optional. We must innovate our understanding of this digital frontier or risk being overwhelmed by it. The Internet isn't just a utility; it’s the engine of 'What’s Next.' It allows me to write this book, and it allows you to read it. It is our greatest tool, our most complex toy, and—if we aren't careful—our most dangerous master.
The journey from the Streets of Chicago to the 'Silicon' of the Cloud has been a wild ride. The Internet was the vehicle that got us here. Now, the question is: Where is it taking us next?"
